Story of Place, Product & People

It is with great pleasure that The Board of Directors of the Lawrence History Center announces our 11TH ANNUAL EARTHA DENGLER HISTORY AWARD.
We will be honoring JUAN C. YÉPEZ AND LUIS E. YÉPEZ, JR OF MAINSTREAM GLOBAL

The Lawrence History Center, founded 31 years ago by the indomitable Eartha Dengler as the Immigrant City Archives, has worked from its very first days to make accessible the rich history of Lawrence and her people. For 11 years, the Center has spotlighted the efforts and accomplishments of many people, past and present, who have worked to bring development and prosperity to Lawrence and are seeking to rebuild it today.

The 2009 Dengler Award honors Juan and Luis Yépez for their leadership in economic development, historic preservation and the adaptive re-use of historic buildings. Through their vision, entrepreneurial success and spirit of collaboration and commitment to community, they are setting the pace for the group of young leaders who are transforming Lawrence. Sons of immigrants themselves, they are making history in our Immigrant City.

The Dengler Award Ceremony and Gala Reception will be held in the Southwick-Union Crossing Building, 5th floor, 50 Island Street on June 11, 2009 in the former Executive Offices of Richard Grieco, son and nephew of the founders of Grieco Brothers, Nicholas and Vito Grieco.

The Lawrence History Center’s companion exhibit,
Made in America~ Story of Southwick-Union Crossing~People Place, Product
will be previewed on the night of the Dengler Award Reception.

Both the Dengler Award Event and the Made in America exhibit offer significant opportunities for partners and sponsors who wish to join the History Center in honoring Juan and Luis Yépez, and in bringing to life the extraordinary and continuing story of the people and products behind the Southwick Mill building.

This exhibit tracks the 100 year history of the Southwick site, from its first use as Lawrence Textiles, to the clothing manufacturing business of the Grieco Brothers, through the Southwick-Brooks Brothers era and now. Transformation of this area into a new Lawrence neighborhood at Union Crossing developed through a history-making partnership among Lawrence Community Works, the Yepez Brothers and many other local partners.

The Lawrence History Center is very grateful to the Sidell Family, committed leaders in Lawrence’s revitalization story, who have generously stepped forward as the Lead Sponsors of this year’s event.

The Exhibit, curated by Claire and Leah Russell, will then be open to the public from June 11,2009 through Labor Day at Lawrence Heritage State Park 1 Jackson Street, Lawrence, MA. The Park is free, open to all, handicapped accessible and open 7 days a week.
